TMD/TMJ

The jaw joint connects to the neck. Most TMJ problems involve both.

About TMD/TMJ

TMD (temporomandibular dysfunction) refers to problems with the jaw joint, the muscles around it, and the cervical spine that the jaw biomechanically connects to. Symptoms include jaw pain, clicking, headaches, ear pain, and neck pain.

We treat TMJ comprehensively, jaw joint mobilization, trigger-point work on jaw muscles, upper cervical adjusting, and posture work. Many patients see significant improvement.

Common causes

  • Jaw joint dysfunction or disc displacement
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Upper cervical dysfunction
  • Stress and clenching patterns
  • Trauma or whiplash

How we treat it

  • Jaw joint mobilization (intra-oral when indicated)
  • Trigger-point release on jaw and neck muscles
  • Upper cervical adjusting
  • Coordination with dental providers as needed
